It seems like yesterday I returned to my graduate studies, holiday decorations came down and I began planning my summer shape up routine, although it was three months ago it still feels like yesterday. The spring equinox arrives tomorrow at 5:45pm (CDT), it marks the time when the sun passes over the celestial equator. It’s the time of year to me that signals bright colors, sweet smells and beautiful flowers all bloom, a time for celebration of longer days and warmer temps, and boy am I ready!! I’m a fan of all seasons but hands down spring is my favorite, after all it’s my birth season, leaving me with feelings of starting fresh and new. I just completed my health policy class which has spiked my interest in nursing politics and policy change, on the first day of class I was a bit intimidated going over the curriculum, but soon realized I enjoyed the learnings and how nurses in health policy can lend to significant healthcare changes, changes that happen to align with my professional goals. Goals that will lend to improving the health and wellness of nurses which ultimately will have a direct effect improving health and wellness on patients….I did very well in the class, now I have a week off then it’s back to the books!
The winter solstice also left me spending time with youth, which continues into the spring equinox…….I began reading with kindergartens at my local elementary school, and wow, this has been such a wonderful experience, I went in with the goal of reading a book or two to a child, hoping to help them improve in their reading and comprehension….well it’s been so much more. One day a week I walk over to the school, and read with a child for 20 minutes, reading to a total of five children, I receive the same children each week. I think in the first two weeks the children were feeling me out just as I was feeling out their reading level, styles and preferences….you know, trying to get to know each other in our own unique ways. Well after week two each child has come racing in smiling, laughing, telling me exactly what they want, to quote one “you read I turn the page”……no problem buddy! A child’s attention span is short so I make the best out of the first fifteen minutes, because by minute sixteen, they want tell you about their friend, animals, siblings and anything else that will stop you from reading…….I LOVE it! I find this to be a win, win, experience, as each child returns to class they leave me with a smile, thank you, book request for the following week and sometimes a hug….yea WINNING! Last week confirmed I was doing exactly what I was supposed to be doing for these kindergartens…..standing in the checkout line at my neighborhood grocery store, one of the students and I catch eyes as her mom pushes her in a cart, as soon as we locked eyes she begins to smile and wave franticly. Tapping on her mother’s arm who was in search of an item on a nearby shelf, “mom, mom” she says with excitement, “mom, look”, pointing at me “we read together!” I was my turn in line, so mom and I mouth a simple hello and big smiles. In that moment I was sure I was making a difference in these children’s lives, and it left me inspired to do as much as I can to continue to do so.
Recently I began cycling outside again, since Chicago weather has been cooperating, it feels awesome to get my cardio in outdoors, and as a nature lover I always feel my best when I’m able to be one with nature. I’m fortunate enough to live across the street from the lake and bike path, so getting out three times a week is my short term goal as Mother Nature permits, I’ve also begun Oprah & Deepak 21 day meditation, which I absolutely love, I meditate daily, but it’s a nice change to be guided in by Oprah & Deepak, it makes me commit to journal writing and reflection post meditation. I’ve become so comfortable in blog writing for the word to read that I was slaking on my private journal writing post meditation. This meditation series focus is on manifesting true success, there have been many other meditation series offered, without knowing what this series focus was I’d mentally committed to joining, I’m happy I did as I’m finding theses meditations have arrived at the perfect time in my personal and professional life…..I want to share today’s meditation with you………
Day 4- A Successful Body
Our body is our primary supporter and ally for all the success we make in life. To be our solid foundation of success, our body must be aligned with the present moment, and with our goals, our values, and our loves. For that we must free the body from the false images the media and society tell us is the ideal body. Those external standards of youthful beauty and attractiveness are not the criteria for a successful body.
For your body to be a true ally in a successful life, it only needs to support your wellbeing. That means not only general physical health, but also a sense of energy and lightness that upholds your awareness in the present moment with alertness, receptivity, and creativity. You can have this kind of a body if you treat it as a dear and trusted friend. If you make choices for your body on this basis, your body will take care of your wellbeing and that will express itself as a successful life.
Our centering thought for today is:
I gain lightness and energy from my body.
Om Ram Ramaya – Perfect balance energizes my body
Just what my soul needed today, I hope you find it useful as well.
