Just about four years ago I was contacted by author Petula Varsha who was starting a pilot workshop for inner city girls focused on building their self-esteem. The authors request was for me to write a love letter to my younger self, with the understanding that it would be read publicly. I remember that day well, I’d recently come out of a love relationship that I knew was heading nowhere, and I was in transition with my career. In all honesty I was heading towards a dark lonely depression……being asked to write this letter allowed me release things I thought I’d tucked away long ago. I wrote the letter without a pause, letting the tears flow with each key stroke, it was medicinal to say the least, after submitting the author contacted me and expressed how my story touched her. I was a bit embarrassed, said thank you and never looked at the letter again. Fast forward September 2014, the author contacts me and shares the wonderful news that her book is being launched and asked if I would read my original letter.
“Your letter was one of the most inspirational and powerful one that have sincerely touched many girls and women lives. I am having a book launch on October 5, 4-7 to celebrate US and wanted to invite you as well as ask if you would be open to reading your original letter at the launch?” ~Petula
Of course I will, this is an honor, if you know me well, then you know I’ll do pretty much anything for our youth. On Sunday, I pulled up my love letter and read it for the first time since writing it………I cried…….
I'm extending this invite to ALL! I would love for my Chicago people to come out and celebrate Petula Varsha book launch and her initiative to inspire inner city girls. Also hear a little about me and my learning to love and accept myself as well as readings from other powerful and inspiring women. I REALLY hope to see you there!
